10th August | Rough Trade
What can you expect from Amythyst Kiah at Rough Trade on 10th August? A whiff of rock, folk and country blues. There is an excitement forming around her Americana roots.
Amythyst Kiah has toured the UK, appearing at a number of festivals, as well as opening for artists such as First Aid Kit and Old Crow Medicine Show. She released a full-length album in February with artists Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell, forming Our Native Daughters. It seemed a perfect blend of talented Americana musicians, with strong women and strong guitarists making bold statements in these troubled times of far-right uprising and growing racism throughout America.
She has, on the other hand released two of her own EPs – Amythyst Kiah And Her Chest of Glass and Dig, both of which boldly promote her strengths as a solo performer. With tracks such as ‘Darlin Corey’, as funky as it is folkly, Kiah has you enraptured with her timeless voice. It reminds me slightly of seeing Yola this year – effortless soul, folk and blues all blended into one.
