Having started out as one of Brit-pop’s big hitters with their debut album, 1977, Ash went on to play the title track on the Ewan McGregor/Cameron Diaz film, ‘A Life Less Ordinary’. Also they are famous for quite possibly the most notorious hidden track ever (remember those?); this trio from Northern Ireland went from singer Tim Wheeler’s dad’s garage to international status within a relatively short period. The boundless energy of their indie-rock songs reincarnated with the Free All Angels album, where they successfully reinvented themselves with a brighter and more optimistic sound, with tunes like ‘Shining Light’ and ‘Burn Baby Burn’ attracting a whole new horde of admirers.

In many ways they feel like the British answer to Green Day and this year the three-piece of would-be Peter Pans released their first full album since 2015. Islands emerged in May 2018 and sees Ash dip their feet back into a that fuzz-saturated format of short, stomping songs such as preceding single ‘Buzzkill’. They’ve lost none of their bite and the current tour is another good opportunity to catch a band often tipped as a must-see live if you ever get the chance.
