15th November | Motion

Defeating the likes of Bowie’s Blackstar, Canadian quartet, Badbadnotgood received the accolade of 6Music’s album of 2016 for their fourth album, IV (taking a leaf out of Ronseal’s book on the naming front). Maybe it was the team photo clad only from the waist down in towels on the album cover that swung it. Maybe “swing” isn’t the best verb to use, considering the cover shot. Bromance-appreciation aside, maybe it was their inimitable blend of hip-hop and jazz, mixing beats with the off-beat to bring the experimental into the mainstream that set them a head above the rest.

Like a hybrid of Portishead and Gregory Porter (Gregory Portishead?), channelling Morcheeba and The Brand New Heavies, they can give the blissful sense in this frenetic world that ‘Time Moves Slow.’ There’s a steady energy, rather than a soporific slumber to their sound, likely to reset a racing pulse to a healthy pace. There are more funky jazz noir tunes, like their Colin Stetson collaboration, ‘Confessions Pt II,’ electronica-infused ones, such as ‘Lavender’ (featuring Kaytranada) and they can still rattle your cage, such as on ‘Sour Soul,’ Ghostface Killah’s bars giving you plenty to think about.

They come to Motion on Wednesday to redress any sense of a midweek slump you may be feeling. Bearing in mind the recent cold snap, they may well reconsider the towel outfit idea too.
