Black Submarine – ‘New Shores’ | Album Review

The first full-length by newly-named and shiny Black Submarine wallows somewhat in its own juices. Tracks like double-voiced ‘The Love in Me’ and demonic ‘Here So Rain’ show that although still influenced by their former bands (The Verve, Coldplay, Goldfrapp, and Portishead) the band can create tracks that are out-there yet intricate and interesting.

Alas, the album starts to get lost in itself by the sixth track but resurrects itself in time for the rousing finale, ‘You’ve Never Been Here’. At its best, ‘New Shores’ is bold, swaggering and insistent on your attention, but in its lesser moments, an overlong fug.
