6th May | O2 Academy
Dermot Kennedy was tipped as one of the BBC’s Sound of 2019 list, and the ‘one to watch’ label seems to have been permanently appended to his name, to the point at which he probably gets introduced to strangers with that phrase included. Size of audiences for recent shows in many countries suggest that he is very much being watched and gleefully so, as shown by the O2 Academy crowd.
Luca Fogale provided a support slot that warmed up the audience perfectly. A nine, the lights went down and Kennedy arrived. ‘All My Friends’ was an early highlight, performed solo before picking up his guitar again for ‘Lost’ and ‘Young & Free’. ‘For Island, Fires and Family’ unites all in singing the lyrics, “Oh how it must feel to be bird”. Such is the mind-freeing quality of Dermot Kennedy. Photoset by Philip Hiscocks.
