From 2009, alternative pop rock hit a new peak. Bands like Everything Everything, Alt-J and Two Door Cinema Club  were each paving their own Yellow Brick Road to mainstream success, earning glowing critical acclaim and climbing festival bills. In this wave of brilliant new bands came Django Django, who broke the formula with ease, forging a sound that owed at least something to bands like Super Furry Animals and Badly Drawn Boy.

Yet their sound cannot be successfully pigeon-holed, having appeared in 2011 with the uncompromising, jagged debut single, ‘Default’. Their eponymous debut album, released in 2012, went on to be nominated for a Mercury Prize and reached number 33 on the UK Albums Chart. Come 2015, their second album, Born Under Saturn reached the UK Top 20 and built on their art rock roots, with the epic ‘First Light’ showing great promise for what was to come.

Three years on and they’ve gone back to basics with their third album, Marble Skies. With contributions from Metronomy drummer, Anna Prior and Slow Club member, Rebecca Taylor they have put together their most experimental record yet with winning results. 80s bliss surrounds the summer jam ‘In Your Beat,’ while on the opposite side of the spectrum, ‘Sundials’ finds them in their most zen state.

There is a glorious mash of genres packed into their new material, yet it makes for their most concise and focused effort so far. Come and see them in action on 24th March at SWX, whether you crave the pop shapeshifter ‘Default’ or want to float along to ‘Marble Skies’.
