19th January | Crofter’s Rights
As we brace ourselves for what 2017 has to offer one thing that should kick the year off nicely is Dream Wife’s gig at Crofters Rights this January. The threesome met at art college in Brighton and originally started the band as an art project for an exhibition – fast forward to now and they’re doing a headline tour of the UK with a support slot on Sleigh Bells’ tour later in the year.
The band’s singer, Rakel Mjoll, is Icelandic which comes through beautifully in her singing voice and inevitably alludes to comparisons with fellow Reykjavik born star Bjork. However, Dream Wife’s sound is leaning more towards the punk scale than electronica – but that’s not to say the electronica influence isn’t there. Fans of Grimes and Hinds are likely to enjoy their garage rockin’ pop sound with a nod to the 80’s, especially channelling Bananarama and even a bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees. What’s not to love?
The group’s artistic flair comes through in their styling and videos, and they have been known to get creative with the set at some of their gigs. This all points to a very exciting show and one not to be missed, so mix a little bit of Dream Wife into your Veganuary/dry January schedule and we’ll see you there.
