22nd July | St. George’s
As part of River Town, Bristol’s Americana Festival, a triple whammy of badass bluegrass babes will be performing at the striking St. George’s Church. This definitely sounds like something straight out of a film, a talented line-up featuring some of the finest emerging female Americana artists.
Emily Barker’s breezy grooves are heavily rooted within country music, tinged with folk and bursts of blues. There’s some seriously slick guitar playing on her latest album (check out ‘Sister Goodbye’) along with some funky organ licks tying the tracks together, making for a timeless sound. Emily’s warm vocals are drenched with Southern charm, her blend of country and soul is delivered with an air of grace and a fistful of folksy acoustics.
The sound of Holly Macve’s music feels as though it’s been plucked straight out of the Mississippi Delta. Her voice has an angelic twang similar to that of Tammy Wynette’s, taking a more hauntingly beautiful twist in songs such as ‘The Corner of My Mind’. Smooth acoustic guitar chords glide hand-in-hand with Holly’s romantic glissandos, adding a much more colourful spin on country music.
Ending the night will be Jade Bird, contemporary country and blues at its finest. The upbeat ‘Lottery’ is a must-listen. Epic songwriting, gutsy and punchy guitar riffs, plus airs of KT Tunstall meets Dolly Parton, Jade Bird is a heavyweight when it comes to contemporary bluegrass and country – a refreshing take on a timeless genre.
Be sure to grab your ticket for an unmissable evening in an iconic venue.
