While Heavy Lungs may still be best known for having their singer’s name sung repeatedly by a certain other Bristol band on TV shows and in sold-out gigs across the land, the Adele-like speed with which this show sold out was evidence that they are gaining a strong following in their own right, especially in their home town.
Anyone who was to invest time to listen through their releases to date would quickly grasp the reasons that underlie their growth, with fierce guitars overlaid by Danny Nedelko’s rasping vocals. ‘Descend’ sounds like it belongs on Black Flag’s classic Damaged LP. Blood Brother, a recent split single and RSVP of sorts to that song by that certain other Bristol band, moves more into post-punk territory to great effect. Most recent release, ‘Jealous’, is a real pounding screamer of a song.
With equally noisy London duo, John supporting, The Louisiana will undoubtedly be shaking, even before Heavy Lungs hit the stage. This promises to be a loud, sweaty night for those lucky enough to have a ticket. Those who don’t might consider lying down near the M Shed and feeling the gig through the floor.
