Independent Venue Week has announced plans for its sixth year, welcoming Mercury-nominated artist Novelist as ambassador for 2019. Taking place from Monday 28th January until Sunday 3rd February, close to 190 venues are taking in the event this year, an increase in 45 from last year’s festivities.

IVW is a week-long event that celebrates self-run venues across the country, inspiring people to fend off the January blues, head out to a gig and get involved with the prosperous communities that are thriving in each village, town and city, Bristol being absolutely no exception.

Alongside new ambassadors, IVW have announced a new initiative titled “Where Does Music Take You?”, which looks to inspire passionate gig-goers and music fans to go to shows outside of their hometowns and cities and join bands in “touring”.

It’s always bands that tour around the country, but we feel there’s a great opportunity for gig goers to start touring as well, exploring part of the country they’ve never been to” Samantha Renke, this year’s non-artist ambassador, actor, music fan and disability campaigner explained; “You see all of these venue names on tour posters but so many people have never visited them, usually staying local“.

Grime artist Novelist will fulfill his role by doing a UK tour during the week, playing and visiting venues he’s yet to of played, full information on those dates will be announced soon. Commenting on intimate and independent venues, he stated “I thoroughly enjoy having a close connection to my fans and the opportunity to entertain and interact at close quarters gives me the best buzz.”

In Bristol, the venues taking part are The Crofters Rights, Rough Trade Bristol, Exchange, Mr Wolfs, The Bristol Fringe, The Lanes and The Louisiana.
