Assembled amongst the gnarled chimneystacks of industrial Manchester, Ist Ist have managed to consistently deliver a spectacular twist on the poetic oddness of their city’s past. Despite pirouettes and manoeuvres amongst some impressive labels and scenes, it has proven impossible to pigeon-hole this outfit in their five-year career, which has conveniently contributed to their alluring appeal.
Having spent their formative years developing a strong buzz through word of mouth and live prowess alone, the band positioned themselves easily into being one of Manchester’s most talked about young bands, netting themselves shows in some of the city’s biggest venues including Gorilla and The Ritz. Naturally, a string of critically-acclaimed singles followed in 2018, culminating in a stellar EP, Spinning Rooms, that can name Radio 6’s Steve Lamacq amongst its avid supporters.
Never straying far from their DIY ethos has proved instrumental in the band’s escalating career, aiding their reputation in the avant-garde and art-rock scenes that orbit their musical output, positioning them firmly as a band that deserve the respect of their peers. With the increasing popularity of the weirder side of rock, perfectly mirrored by BLACK MIDI’s recent successes, it seems the time may have come for Ist Ist to receive their big break and boy, do they deserve it. Hurtling into our own Louisiana this month off of the back of their recent live EP, now is the time to catch one of the most exciting live bands of the moment.
