In our most recent issue, we reviewed the new release by J-Felix, Whole Again Hooligan. Our man, Oliver Evans declared, “His second record even comes with a squad Taylor Swift would be envious of, including noteworthy collaborators such as Afua, El Train, Sol Goodman and Andrew Ashong.” So what’s this confirmed collaborator been up to in the current, more solitary era of social distancing? We caught up with him for our third in the current series of ‘In Short’ features:

“Lockdown – wise, I’ve been recording a few DJ mixes for different things, including keeping up my show and doing some fill-ins on 1BTN. I did a bit of homeschooling this morning and putting up some resources online for my part-time teaching job. I’ve managed to get a few 8/16-bar ideas down, but not loads of music happening, not loads of time or space at home with the girls. I’m catching up on lots of films at night and a bit of music.

“Prior to the weirdness, I managed to sneak in my album launch show in Bristol, London and Brighton at the last minute, which was a wicked run of shows with the band. A few guest singers didn’t appear because of the virus, but it was still sick! I’ve also been getting loads of extra stuff together to promote my album, including a video which sadly isn’t finished (yet) due to lockdown.

“For the rest of 2020, keep your eyes peeled for another release coming and a few radio appearances. I did have loads of nice gigs booked in – not sure what’s happening there, so I might be driving a delivery truck near you soon! I’m just looking forward to seeing friends and family more than anything.”

Three words to describe my music…

Squelchy, Uplifting, Squiggly

Last photo on my phone…

A picture of me, my girlfriend and my step-daughter all wearing the same sliders, so it looks a bit like a six-legged human with various-sized feet.

Favourite Instagram account…

@neilwatersmusic has to be the one I have a giggle at the most. Worth checking out him and his imaginary orchestra. He is a brilliant musician.

The best venue I’ve played…

Tough. Working on the assumption that this excludes festival stages, The Sage, Gateshead in Newcastle sticks out in my memory!

Earliest song I remember…

Another tough one. The Clash – ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’

The worst job I’ve ever had…

Got to be working at a call centre.

Favourite food on tour…

Good question. Bananas are essential. The Louisiana did lovely pasta with meatballs with ciabatta for us!

Favourite word…

Chunk

Things that cheer me up…

Silly jokes.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

On the beach in Rio de Janeiro

I think you should listen to…

Footshooter

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Michael Jackson
