Over the coming weeks and (possibly) months of quarantine, we’ll be catching up with artists from Bristol and artists on many of Bristol’s finest independent labels.

Our first such catch-up is with Totterdown-spotter extraordnaire, Jamie Cruickshank. At a time when folk are urged to distance themselves from other folk, we hear from Jamie about his early self-isolation (always ahead of the curve) and how he’s able to still connect with folk through his brand of urbane, urban folk. Here’s what he had to say about it all, as well as his all-important answers to our all-important ‘In Short’ questions:

“I’ve had Coronavirus for the past two weeks, which has been rubbish, so was ahead of the curve with self-isolation. But I’m working on some demos for my new album. Lots of analogue stuff, tape and valves. It’s a lot more rocky than my first release, the Worn Through EP and my cover of Emily Isherwood’s track ‘Dormant’ which I released last year. We’ve got a drummer, Lor Nov, in the band now! We were gigging a lot over the winter, and I can’t wait to rehearse as a band again when this is over.

“Coming up, I’ll be doing a takeover of The Louisiana’s Instagram on Wednesday and will be playing some of the new tracks live, solo. I’ve also been messing around with some electronic ideas with my bandmates from The Gnarwhals.

“Since lockdown we’ve been doing street sing-alongs on my road in Windmill Hill. There are two primary school children who are in a band together and are still playing together, but now across the street from one another from their front gardens. We’re all learning the words.

“And there’s Breakfest on September 12th at Thekla to look forward to.”
