We spoke to the rising Bristol-based R&B artist Javeon in light of his newest offering ‘With You’.
Javeon picked up immediate heat across the likes of Complex and The405 earlier this year following his previous releases ‘Paper’, ‘Redlight’ and ‘Made Your Bed’. He’s now returned with the polished new offering ‘With You’ – and we love it even more than the last.
Making his name with his recent two-track EP Clockwork, the singer/songwriter is keeping up the output with an icy, trappy instrumental creating a jagged landscape to finesse an assured vocal performance. It’s a fresh statement of intent from an artist making waves across both sides of the Atlantic.
With co-signs from cult heavyweights Two Inch Punch, Cyril Hahn and El Train, and with more releases to follow, Javeon maintains the quality control he set with his previous releases and continues to set the tone with a soulful, emotive new joint.
We spoke to the artist to find out about a few tracks that have influenced his sound as we get ready to hear a lot more from him in 2019…
Grades – Sinead harness – If you Let me
In 2015 when I was exploring new ways to blend R&B and dance music electronically I was
listening to a lot of both separately. Then I came across grades and I was already aware of him from when he made his house stuff, but this new blend of electronic R&B music that he was making for other artists blew my mind and is still a strong influence to me and my sound.
Frank Ocean – Novacane
This song and the whole Nostalgia Ultra mixtape completely redefined what R&B was and had to be for me. It came around at a time where people were really exploring different forms of electronic music, but this felt both new yet familiar. His lyrics and concepts weren’t of your typical R&B artist. It was open and honest in a way I hadn’t yet experienced whilst being cool the whole way through. Completely changed my approach to writing music.
James Blake – Limit to your love
I was already a big fan of him from his CMYK days with Hessle audio. To watch an artist be so brave and completely flip their sound whilst covering an already amazing track and being so original with it was so inspiring for me at a time where I was trying to musically figure things out.
SBTRKT Ft Little dragon & Drake – Wildfire Rmx
I must admit, like a lot of people I hadn’t heard the original until this remix came out. I’ve got so many good memories of being out and listening to mixes with this song in. SBTRKT was doing some great things, his music was sick, got the drake collab and he introduced me to Sampha’s music (not personally).
Ross from friends – Talk to me you’ll understand
This track just throws me back to a time when a lot of people were playing/making stuff like this in the early dubstep days. It’s pure sunshine and I could listen to it for an hour and not get bored. I’ve never been to outlook festival, but I’d imagine this on a good boat party would go down a treat!
