15th October | SWX
Oh, Jordan Rakei, you lovely thing, spoiling us with yet more wonderful music with your third album, Origin.
With his usual caramel soul vocals draped over his hip-hop inspired beats, Rakei has once again produced a record which far surpasses the competition. Containing his typical laid-back nature, Origin persists adamantly with its positive and courageous vibe that contains his signature oceanic percussive sounds, like shells tumbling over each other. This album though, feels more insistent and direct than his previous releases, with marching drums and continuous trails of jazzy melodic experimentation. He seems to draw from further afar too, with glimpses of Spanish guitar and electronic space sounds.
Whilst he was born in New Zealand and moved to Brisbane at the age of three, Rakei is now signed to the British independent label, Ninja Tune, and moved to London several years ago. It seems the chaos of the Big Smoke has bled into the busy-ness of his compositions, with even his more chilled tunes still being enveloped with layers and new corners of surprise. And of course, he continues to cleverly use his vocals for wonderfully subtle yet impactful harmonies. Cleverly though, Rakei’s complex tunes aren’t overdone, just, perhaps, built more for dancing and not for swaying. The perfect type of music to fill SWX on Tuesday 15th October.
