Imagine the first couple of songs you release being picked up by Drake of all people? It’s the kind of urban fairy tale that many millennials could only dream of, but for Jorja Smith it’s real life.
Her popularity only grew as her first single from Soundcloud, ‘Blue Lights’, was nominated in the ‘Best Song’ category at the MOBO Awards. The following year, she was in the ‘Best Female Artist’ category and came fourth in the BBC Sound of 2017 list.
But her time came in 2018 when she won the BRITS ‘Critics Choice’ Award. With the critically acclaimed 2016 EP Project 11 under her belt, in June 2018 came her debut album, Lost & Found.
On the album, she forges a bold sound with a batch of R&B ballads peppered with a trip-hop flavour, from the enchanting early hit, ‘Blue Lights’ to the stuttered sonic wizardry in ‘February 3rd’. Yet she doesn’t stick within her comfort zone; ‘On Your Own’ flirts with dancehall and her collaboration with Preditah, ‘On My Mind’, is a sizzling garage revival.
Considering her debut was released in June, Smith has already amassed quite the list of contacts. From Stormzy to Drake, she has more than deserved the outrageous demand for her live shows, with her UK tour now all sold out. Her Bristol show at the O2 Academy is bound to solidify her status as a modern R&B star in the making, as one of the most hyped shows of the year rapidly approaches.
