Born Dante Terrell Smith, now known as Yasiin Bey, Mos Def is many things to many people: an actor, activist and renowned hip-hop musician. He’s starred as Ford Prefect, “Left Ear” and Chuck Berry; worked with the likes of Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, Gorillaz, DJ Shadow and other luminaries; is one half of newly-reformed duo Black Star with Talib Kweli; and has, to date, released four solo albums.
This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of his seminal, gold-certified debut album, ‘Black On Both Sides’; an album of peerless quality that’s since been recognised as one of the finest albums in hip-hop history. To mark the anniversary, Bey will be performing the album in its entirety with ‘classics’ at the O2 Academy this November, 27th.
But that’s not all; it wouldn’t be a party without some very special guests. Joining him will be Afrika Bambaataa, Keith Murray (Def Squad), and DJ Cheeba & DJ Moneyshot who will be performing a full A/V show.
Working in collaboration with Andy Heath from Bristol’s Sip the Juice, for one night only the Academy will be transformed for a celebration of, not only Bey’s debut, but forty plus years of hip-hop in the making. This once in a lifetime extravaganza is not one to pass on, so be sure to act fast and secure your tickets sooner rather than later.
