13th November | O2 Academy
Everything that Rat Boy does comes with a shot of adrenaline. Everyone’s favourite Chelmsfordian (equal first in the 2018 ‘Poll We Just Made Up’ with the endlessly-fascinating Grayson Perry) is on a roll. Shameless skating puns aside, Jordan Cardy directs his own videos, designs a lot of his own artwork, writes and records his songs. If that’s not enough for you, he’s got his clothing line, Scum, going on. Did we mention he’s in his early twenties? It’s admirable. It’s enviable. Some people reading this may feel compelled to reappraise their aims for the day beyond, ‘Get up off my arse at some point.’
With his second album due out in January, Rat Boy is whipping up plenty of advance enthusiasm with this autumn UK tour. Entitled Internationally Unknown as a tongue-in-cheek response to a jibe that his previous work has been ‘a bit too British’, it’s a little more feisty than his tales of youthful japes in early favourites like ‘Fake ID’ and ‘Sign On’. Alesha Hickmans was at the O2 Academy to witness the Rat Boy gradually turning into Rat Man and to capture this photoset.
