Robin Mitchell – ‘Vol II: Mellowtape’

Having missed last year’s (brilliant) ‘Feather Weight Soul Tape’, ‘Vol II: Mellowtape’ serves as an impressive introduction to the bedroom-fuelled world of Robin Mitchell.

From the eclectic, instrumental opening gambit of ‘Blip’, it’s clear there’s something of marriage to follow. Between the calm, honest vocals over plucked banjo and the popping electronic percussion, stand-out track ‘Soliloquy’ sews together new and old; a quality solidified in ‘The Trick’, where Robin’s timeless songwriting unravels not dissimilarly to Cass McCombs’.

Add to this the twee quasi-duet of ‘From The Waist Up’, consider my personal playlist firmly invaded.
