February 14th | Thekla

Alexander Giannascoli, better known under the moniker (Sandy) Alex G, is set to bring his woozy, enigmatic brand of lo-fi bedroom pop to Thekla this Valentine’s day. The artist’s steady rise to low-key stardom began with a series of Bandcamp home-releases in the early 2010s, although the release of DSU on the independent New York-based label, Orchid Tapes in 2014 proved a catalyst for the Philadelphia native to amass a strong following. Having caught the attention of Frank Ocean through his earlier material, Giannascoli boasts credits on 2016 projects, Blonde and Endless, alongside collaborations with artists such as Porches and Julia Brown.

This year’s tour follows the autumn drop of Alex G’s eighth studio album, House of Sugar. Released through the Domino label, House of Sugar is a critically-adored, meticulously-stitched patchwork of genres and musical techniques. Subtly marrying folk and country with whirring electronica and moments of abstract yet intensely personal lyrics, Giannascoli pioneers a corner of the music industry that he’s largely carved out single-handedly.

An artist with a track-record of off-beat live shows and limited UK appearances, the intimate setting of a sold-out crowd at Bristol’s Thekla only serves to bolster the anticipation for Friday’s show.
