In support of her excellent new album, Grim Town, released last month, Irish singer-songwriter, SOAK will be bringing her own unique style of indie-pop to Thekla.
Real name Bridie Monds-Watson, she adopted the stage name SOAK to represent the combination of soul and folk in her music. After releasing her Mercury Music Prize and Q Award nominated debut album, Before We Forgot How To Dream via Rough Trade and being featured on the BBC’s Sound of 2015 longlist, SOAK has continued to hone and develop her musical style, with her new album boasting a more polished and confident pop sound, without forgetting her musical roots.
Despite the new album’s depressive title, its songs are an absolute joy that take the listener on an emotional and uplifting journey of escapism, inspired by SOAK’s upbringing in Derry, Northern Ireland. There’s a real sense of life-affirming magic to SOAK’s music that is sure to go down a treat at Thekla, and I for one cannot wait to hear these songs performed in person.
