Legendary music venue Start The Bus closed its doors for the last time on Saturday. The owners of the bar are refurbishing inside and taking it in a new direction, part of which means getting rid of good live music in the bar.
Start The Bus has become a lynch pin of the Bristol live music scene, providing a stage to then-rising acts, such as Mac Demarco, Metronomy and AlunaGeorge, and giving a platform to local bands, both from Bristol and further afield, to play their first show. Those who helped book and put on shows helped to create a truly unique venue, a place that put on exciting and interesting nights, and a space that’ll be sorely missed.
The bar will reopen, but as Fat Sally’s. The emphasis will not be on live music. Start The Bus was run by Mitchells and Butlers, a large restaurant operator, and Fat Sally’s will still be owned by them.
I’m sure everyone with an interest in live music in Bristol will have a favourite story about a night spent there, whether as a musician, promoter or punter. We’ll be collating the best stories into a full and proper obituary for the venue soon.
EDIT: It seems it’s actually changing its name to Carnival Saloon. Make what you will of that…
