Mercy’s Cartel formed a central part of our New Sounds feature for 2019. Blending Afrobeat, alternative R&B and trap, hip-hop and neo-soul influences, she’s a forceful performer with a big voice and an equally sizeable stage presence. If you were at last year’s Downs Festival, you’d have seen her open the main stage and stake a solid claim for a higher future billing. We asked how she was getting on with the current quarantine, before she answered our ‘In Short’ questions:

“Unfortunately, I’ve lost someone really dear to me to the current circumstances. I’ve been trying to grieve, but it’s hard to properly process what’s happening with all the restrictions to seeing your family and organising funerals. However, I’m more motivated than ever to keep making music that I’m proud of in honour of their memory and so I can give back to my family.

“So I’ve been making some remixes of songs on Instagram that people really mess with. I’ve been producing more, getting back into playing bass and …. I do mindfulness now so I’m the most woke person you’d probably ever meet :)”
