Taking Back Sunday // Live Review & Photoset

20th June | O2 Academy

It’s Thursday night on a Summers-ish eve in June. The O2 Academy is full of ex-emos, still emos and gone but not forgotten emos. Mates who grew up with Taking Back Sunday. Couples who made out to them. And moshers who just want a good old mosh.

The Academy lights change from blue to red as Adam Lazzara and band step out on to the stage. He owns this. It might be twenty years on, but he’s certainly still got it. We can confirm he’s also still very much got the hair.

The first half of the show is dedicated to the 2002 album Tell All Your Friends and it’s not an exaggeration to say that 90% of the crowd know every song word for word. Kicking off with ‘You Know How I Do’ and shortly followed by ‘Cute Without the E (Cut from the Team)’, the crowd are loving this.

As this is a commemorative tour, it’s no surprise he’s got a bank of stories to share. You get the feeling that they are here celebrating their age and their heritage and this is the ultimate throwback tour.

“I lost track of the set list, I was having such a good time,” Adam tells us, before throwing himself and his microphone into the next set of hits.

“This is our last show in the UK and we made the right decision,” he says to a roaring crowd before the New York four piece close with ‘MakeDamnSure’.

Twenty years on, they’re proving melodramatic lyrics and emo rock really can stand the test of time. Here’s to the next twenty.
