Try Thoughts is a Brighton based label which I’ve only recently discovered, but as they say, better late than never. Spanning from soul, funk and jazz to breaks, beasts and dub, it manages to merge traditional (fools may call out of date) sounds into recent technology and releases records really worth hearing. This taster compilation, spanning fifteen tracks and all the variations on the above themes they work with, follows their Shapes 10:01 comp, which boasted two 12”’s and a CD with bonus tracks for just fourteen quid. This release? Well, you can bag it at your local record store for a quid. And no, that’s not a typo. Believing in physical ownership, TT do however much they can to make the physical product as enticing as possible, try finding many of these tracks or artists online and you’ll be left scratching your head. “What do you mean – Google has never heard of Quantic and his Combo Barbaro?” From the velvet tones of Kylie Auldist to the more hip-hop and beats influenced Millez Benjiman, Natural Self and Kinny, there really is something here for everyone. And by default, you’ll probably find something here which you never thought you would’ve liked before. And that is the sign of a great compilation.
