February 27th | Crofters Rights
Watching Heather Woods Broderick feels like being either at the movies, or even in your own movie. Her show at The Crofters Rights was suitably transformative that 2020 Stokes Croft felt far, far away and the enclosed performance area felt like like a pleasant wilderness and a wide-open space, more like the Oregon coastline, which has inspired some of her recent creativity. Broderick’s voice carries you, cradles you benevolently and lifts you yet further from reality. You can sense a natural benevolence, like the feel of calm waves.
She showed she could be at ease the foreground on guitar, or tucked away behind a piano. Broderick supported close friend and collaborator, Sharon Van Etten in 2019. 2020’s Bristol show suggested that she could easily be spoken of in the same breath as her deservedly-vaunted comrade.
