After being plucked from obscurity by the likes of Annie Mac and Zane Lowe, Alex Crossan hasn’t done too bad for himself. ‘Lotus Eater’ was a bold breakthrough that brought flute rhythms back before Lizzo made them cool again. Just to throw another major milestone in there, he was the first artist to be nominated at the Grammy Awards as a solo artist and the creative director for the same album, his eponymous debut album.
Yet the breezy steel drums that made ‘Lovesick’ and sun-kissed pop that graced ‘What If I Go?’ are in the past. Crossan’s second album is a more experimental affair with guest spots from the likes of slowthai and Clairo.
His sold-out album launch show at The Fleece will be the first time new material from Raw Youth Collage will be played in its entirety. The differences are striking but thrilling: jarring beats and unexpected riffs dominate the latest singles ‘Deal Wiv It’ and ‘I Don’t Think I Can Do This Anymore’. Whether the brave swerve to the left field pays off for the Guernsey DJ is yet to be seen, but from what we have already heard, Mura Masa is still one of the most forward-thinking electronic producers of the moment.
