22nd February | Thekla
What had you achieved by the time you were 19? GCSEs, A Levels, University? This is the path that most people probably hope to take, but Alex O’Connor, the teenager performing under the alias Rex Orange County is not most people. Having already released a successful album, contributed to Tyler, The Creator’s huge 2017 release Flower Boy, performed with Frank Ocean and recently achieved second place in the BBC’s Sound of 2018 poll, Rex stops by to play an unmissable show at Thekla this Thursday on his sold-out UK tour.
OC’s style falls halfway between conventional, slick R&B beats and the thoughtful, relaxed musings of Mac DeMarco, leading to something that is ridiculously enjoyable to listen to, due to its laid-back yet precise nature. The multi-instrumentalist is also lyrically astute, equally capable of crafting a witty yet desolate look upon the tumultuous nature of youthful relationships (‘Television/So Far so Good’) as he is at unleashing an effortlessly feelgood beast (‘Loving is Easy’).
This already feels like one of those rare opportunities to smugly say, five years down the line, ”Rex Orange County? Oh yeah, I saw him when he was playing Thekla”, as he sells out six straight nights at the Brixton Academy. So, if you can get your hands on one of these golden tickets, I strongly urge you do do so, and if you can’t, you’d better hope you can catch him soon, while his enchanting tunes are filling the intimate venues they suit perfectly.
