21st October | Thekla
Four blokes who don’t live on the coast. What would be the most appropriate name for a band like that? Sea Girls? Oh, OK. They blatantly play surf rock with a name like that, right? Nope. They got their name from a misheard Nick Cave lyric? So there’s a dark, melancholy poetry to their work, then? Hmmm… not really.
Just as the sea is choc-full of different things (fish, mammals, coral, microplastics), Sea Girls’ songs are packed with aspects of pop, the dreamier, janglier side of indie and some rather hefty rock elements too. It makes their sound bold and invigorating. Jessica Bartolini captured their recent Thekla set on camera, supported by The Pale White.
