‘Feather Weight Soul Tape Volume V: Down In The City’ may well make for perfect Sunday listening – quirky bedroom pop, layered with comforting retro sounds, all tied up in a neat little package – but indeed, Robin Mitchell’s latest offering goes deeper to present exactly what it sets out to; a soundtrack drawn from somewhat directionless drifting around a ‘hum-and-drum’ metropolis.
Bringing to mind the stark indie electronics of Metronomy, the twee poetics of Belle & Sebastian and the soulful balance of Sam Smith, Mitchell’s music gives you the distinct impression that you could float away for a bit whilst listening to it. Indeed, the album title and soft, new age cityscape artwork alone seem to beg you to do so… if only for a little while.
